The Maine Green Independent Party was founded in 1984, and is the local affiliate of the Green Party of the United States. The Green Party recognizes the failure of the two-party system, and the necessity of introducing new voices to solve political gridlock.
The Green Party is the only major political party that refuses all corporate contributions. There is no way for politicians to disrupt the corrupting influence of corporate campaign funding if they accept these contributions.
The Green Party has 10 key values and four pillars:
Peace: Our country’s long wars and worldwide military presence are immoral and unsustainable. Our military budget must be cut dramatically.
Ecology: The human cost of climate change is too high. We need to get off fossil fuels and onto renewable energy, while protecting natural ecosystems around the planet.
Social Justice: Falling wages and rising bills are hitting most of us, and the most vulnerable are hit the hardest. We demand a living wage and a real safety net.
Democracy: We demand public financing of elections, open debates, and more representative voting systems.
